Evaluation

1) In my research and planning I have learned a lot about album cover conventions and how people in them are represented. A series called hip-hop honeys was showed to us and it gave me a very good understanding of how people are represented in the media these days. I also evaluated two different album covers in great detail. This helped give me a better understanding of how they are laid out. For example the titles on an album cover are 90 percent of the time located near the top. The font of the title has to be in a bold font or large font, just so that it stands out and isn’t hard to read for the audience. There also has to be an image of some sort, whether it is the artist or just an image that gives an idea of what type of genre the album is. These images normally take up the whole of the front and back of the album cover, just to make it easier for customers to view it. There should also be some sort of copyright symbol to tell the customers that they cant copy anything from the album. All of the ideas that I have picked out from my research I have taken into account when making my album cover. For example the title of mine is located at the bottom and and the artist names are located at the top. I also have a main image in the middle that stands out well. 

2) With my album cover I wish to have the genre aimed at dance/electro house. I had included two images that are of two people in my class and have been taken using the schools camera. I placed them either sides of the album cover. I also worked a lot on colours on my album cover. For example all images have been tweaked with to make them look a different colour. I did this with the main image so that it is now in black and white. I did all of this to make the album cover look more interesting and appealing to the audience of the genre. 

3) For my album cover I had two pictures taken of two people in my class. In both pictures they are smirking and have a grin on the faces. This shows that they are cocky and full of themselves. My album cover is aimed at both male and female. The colours used make it easier to appeal to both genders. For example my album cover consists of black and pink. The pink is dark so not too feminine and would still attract men. The back cover consists of the same colours so would attract both genders.

Magazine questions

One of the two conventions that are used on this magazine are direct mode of address and the other is a celebrity that has been used on the front cover. These two conventions have been used to make the magazine more interesting and making you feel more involved. Direct mode of address males you feel involved because it is looking directly at the reader. If the celebrity was to look in a different direction you wouldn't feel as important. Also some of the cover lines are direct mode of address e.i "What your friends really think of you".

The layout of this magazine has been designed to help the main image stand out, all of the cover lines are not as obvious as the main image, they are a lot smaller which helps towards the main image standing out. The color choice makes the magazine seem like something that is aimed at the female audience. The colors pink, purple and white would interest females more than they would males. The typography is san serif that it is aimed at the less rich and sophisticated audience.

The are not that many issues with the representation of the magazine and the main image. She is not presented in a promiscuous way and is not wearing any tight clothing or anything that would represent them in a sexual way. You could argue that the way that she is looking on the magazine is slightly promiscuous, but apart from that there is nothing that would make main image seem promiscous. On the other hand some of the headlines may be considered promiscuous. One of the headlines talks about marriages and is usually on other magazines to. This represents females in a negative way because these type of magazines don't normally have much variety in subject. Most females do have other interest than just marriages, cooking and how you look.

1. One of the two conventions used on this magazine front cover are direct mode of address and a model. These two conventions have been used to make the magazine aspirational. The model is something that people may look at use as a roll model. The direct mode of address is used in cover lines. One of the direct address cover lines is "Your party dress code". 

2. The effects of the layout of this magazine front cover have been used to make the main image stand out. The main colours used are red, green and white. The typography is serif. The layout of the front cover of this magazine is symmetrical.

3. On this magazine i feel there is no problem with representation. The model is not dressed in a sexual way and does not come across as promiscuous. This makes a change because most of the time the girl models on front covers are usually wearing very promiscuous clothing.

Representation in "Pride" magazine

In a lifestyle magazine there are many issues with representation of the people in them. For example most of the time the girls on the front cover are very sexual and promiscuous and dressed and sexual close. This is not very aspirational because this is not how most teenager should be dressing like. 

Masthead- This is the title of the magazine. The title of this magazine is Cosmopolitan

Direct address- This is when the main image is looking directly at the reader. It is also when there is text like 'you' and 'your', speaking directly at you.

Model credits- This is when the main images name is on the front cover and is bold and clear. The model on this magazine is Demi Lovato.

Main cover line- This is the cover line that stands out and is most obvious. On this magazine the main cover line is 'SUPERHOT"

Main image- This is the image that stands out the most. On this magazine the main image is Demi Lovato.





 

Magazine front cover

This is the front cover of my magazine, it is called "Teenage Gossip". The magazine is aimed at teenage girls.

This magazine is called Car and its about cars and people reviewing them. It is mainly aimed at the male audience. The fonts and font colours show this. For example the font colours for cover lines stand out because of the background colour used.The title is very bold to make it stand out and its in a very simple colour to attract the male audience. Some of the font colours are the same as the picture colour this also makes it stand out. The other cover line font colours include white and black. The background is grey with a blue, purple and red stripes going down the middle. All of the fonts used are pretty much the same which is pretty rare for a magazine front cover.





This magazine is called GoodFood and it is about food and how to cook and make it. The font colours show that it is mainly aimed at the female audience. This is shown in the background colours of a light blue and pink. Not many men would normally be interested in these colours. There are many different types of fonts used as cover lines and titles, but they are all in the same colour except for two or three. The colours used are mainly white and some red. The title isnt as bold as the car magazine but it still stands out but it is more feminine because of the font.

This magazine is called Empire and it is about films and reviews of them. The fonts and font colour show that it is aimed at the male audience. The font colours used are red and white. This stand out a lot with a background of black. The black background shows that it is aimed at the male audience. All of the fonts used are not massively different but they still stand out and have an impact on the reader and stand out.

Colour Connotations in Magazines

Different colours can convey different meanings or connotations to the viewer. 














Sports
For a sports magazine I would choose the colours red, orange and yellow. I chose these colours because red attracts people who are interested in physical energy, stamina and stability. I would use yellow because it attracts people who are interested in personal power and creativity. I chose orange because it attracts people who are interested in stimulated creativity and productivity. I would use red as a background and yellow and orange for cover lines to make it stand out.

Gaming
For a gaming magazine I would choose the colours green, yellow and purple. I chose green because it attracts people who are interested in communication and being social. I chose yellow because it attracts people who are interested in having fun and creativity. I chose purple because it attracts people who are interested in imagination and being artistic. I would have purple as a background as purple and yellow and green for cover lines.

Ponies
For a ponies magazine i would choose the colours green, blue, yellow and purple. I would use green because it attracts people who are interested in love. I chose blue because it attracts people who are interested in peace, love and truth. I chose yellow because it attracts people who are interested in fun and creativity. I chose purple because it attracts people who are interested in imagination. I would have purple as  the background and green, blue and yellow for cover lines.

This is my magazine front cover design. In my final design i will increase the size of my main image and have it over lay the title.

Modern: I chose this font for modern because of it being bold and simple.  

Kids: I chose this font for kids because of the little people on top of the letters. 

Sport: I chose this font for sport because of it being in italic and looking like its moving or running.

Masculine: I chose this font for masculine because of it looking sporty and something that you would see on the front of a man based magazine.

Feminine: I chose this font for feminine because there are many serifs on each letter in shapes of butterfly's and flowers, something that a female would be more interested in then men.

Sophisticated: I chose this font for sophisticated because of it being italic and many serifs. Something you would find on the more sophisticated newspapers like the times and telegraph. 

Bold: I chose this font for bold because of it being crazy and it standing out compared to most of the other fonts.

History: I chose this font for history because it has many serifs and  looks like something that would be found on a old victorian book or newspaper.

5) The font used for the magazine title is very bold and modern, its also very simple because of the letters being all in capitals. 

6) The title is aimed mainly at females because of the colour choice, fewer men would pick up a magazine with pink and white coloured font instead of darker colours like blue and black.

7) The main cover line is the "Cosmos Body revolution". I can tell this because the font is a lot larger than the rest. If you was to pick it up of a shelf, it would be the first cover line you would look at.

8) Different colours are used on the front cover because if it was to be in one colour it would be boring and dull.

9) Fonts are also something that if it was to all be the same it be boring.

10) I would change some of the fonts and font colours to make it look more interesting. The front cover only uses 3 different colours which makes it seem dull. 

This magazine cover is symmetrical because the image and the magazine can be folded in half and it would look like a mirrored image.
